Page 4 THE ROCKETEER Wednesday, December 21, 1966 Chela, Marilupe Anticipating Christmas American Style | Students Write Letters to Santa | Christmas is coming and you all know what that means! But what does it mean to RHS for eign exchange students and what do they think of Christmas, American style? Chela Sona, Argentine ex change student, says the biggest difference for her is that in her country, “It is so hot!” Never having seen snow, she’s really looking forward to a lot of it this winter. She says Christmas is more important in America than in her country. In fact according to her, it’s not even one of the biggest holidays in Argentina. Only the bigger cities use street decorations, and she has never been to a Christmas parade be fore this year. In Argentina, as everywhere, Christmas is for kids, but with a few differences. Argentine children put out shoes, not stock ings, for “Papa Noel” to fill, and instead of leaving him cook ies and milk, they put out hay and water for Mary’s donkey. Roxboro High’s Mexican ex change student, Marilupe Davila Davila, says that in her coun try, Christmas celebrations start December 16. Celebrations con tinue until January 7, when all Christmas decorations come down and things return to normal. In Mexico, as in Argentina, every household has a nativity scene and most have Christmas trees. Mexican towns, however, do use street decorations and all the big stores have their own Santas. Laddie’s Beauty Salon It’s the season What better reason For a new 'do. V Visit our salon and give yourself a treat for the holidays. V Woody Village Shopping Center 599-4212 Christmas, in Mexico, is es sentially a religious holiday. Mexican children hang stockings just as we do but, according to Marilupe, they believe the Baby Jesus fills them. In spite of these differences, or perhaps because of them, both Chela and Marilupe say they’re looking forward to a real American Christmas and, in fact, are quite excited about the whole thing. Members of Carpentry Class Beginning Two-Year Project The Carpentry Class of RHS, guided by Mr. J. Earl Brittain, is engaged in some serious busi ness. The members are building a house! Beginning with this year, the class is in a two year program. The students have begun on the house. They put such structures as the windows and doors in the first year. In the second year the boys will complete their pro ject. The Carpentry Class is not the sole builder of the house. The Bricklaying Class does the brick work. Electricians and plumbers Its that time again when everyone is trying to decide on what he wants for Christmas. Some of the kids at RHS already have their minds made up and would like to share their ideas with you. Though some may seem a bit eccentric, just re member that our student body is no ordinary one. Dear Santa, Please bring Snoopy a Red Baron to shoot down. Randy Woody do their particular jobs. The students work on the house for a two hour period each day. One hour is spent in the classroom, learning how to read blueprints and learning how to build a house. This year’s house is being built on Montford Drive. The slim profit from the sale of the house is put into a revolv ing fund, which is used from year to year. At the end of the two year course the student can receive two-thirds of the pay of a regu lar carpenter. Dear Santa, I want a “younger girl” who loves life.
